NCC partners ICPC to check cybercrime

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), yesterday, sought the cooperation of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC) in the implementation of the Cybercrime bill.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Umar Dambatta, made the request when he paid a courtesy visit to the ICPC headquarters in Abuja.
The EVC said that the move was in compliance with the Federal Government directives and in line with the standing orders for the operations of the Anti-corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU).

With this, he reasoned that the government would have a better understanding of the real situation in the country, particularly, at this time the social media practice and cybercrime are on the upsurge.

According to him, social media gives practitioners unfettered access to information dissemination but insisted that they must do so with responsibility.
‘‘We solicit for the cooperation of the ICPC in the full implementation of the Cybercrime bill which was signed into law in 2015. By so doing, we will have a better understanding of the real situation at this time social media practice and cybercrime are on the upsurge.

As a responsible regulator, Prof. Dambatta said the Commission under his watch recognizes the importance of providing an enabling environment for the development of ICT, stressing that the goal can only be achieved if there is renewed and continuous collaboration between sister agencies for the common good of the nation.
