India is big business, and Huawei is looking to carve out a bigger piece of the pie.
Peter Zhai, President of Huawei India Consumer Business Group, said on Thursday that the company will soon begin manufacturing smartphones in the country, reports The Economic Times.
Huawei, the world's third largest smartphone brand according to IDC research, making its own phones in the country will take advantage of India's Make in India program, which offers tax incentives to foreign companies that make products locally.
"As international brand, we are interested in developing our India business at right time. It is going to be second largest mobile devices market after China," he reportedly said. "We will be aggressive in India."
Huawei, who this year wowed with its P9 smartphone, isn't the only company that's gunning for a top spot in the Indian market. Apple has this year focused more than ever on the populous nation, announcing this year it'd be opening a iOS design and development accelerator in Bengaluru and a mapping research centre in Hyderabad.
